The scariest thing about anything is the unknown. And when you don’t know the numbers, the process itself can automatically become scary. Bathrooms and kitchens are the main areas of the house that most homeowners would love to change. With these steps, you’ll be able to get a rough estimate of exactly how much you’ll be putting into this style remodel.
Get a Bathroom Remodel Checklist
With YouTube University and endless resources, download a bathroom remodel checklist. It takes you through each category of a remodel that you’ll have to decide on such as tile/finishing, fixtures, plumbing work, etc. Bathrooms are the smallest rooms in a home, but pack a lot of utility in each square inch.
Decide What You Want to Keep
You don’t have to strip the bathroom completely bare for it to be a remodel. Some of the original bathroom items can be recycled into the new look that you’re going for. Mark the items you plan to reuse and deduct them from the budget.
Shop for What You Want to Buy New
Having a “wishlist” and already knowing what you want to add to your bathroom allows you to go ahead and have ideal numbers in your head. It also helps you to compare prices and potentially find a better deal rather than depending on your contractor to handle the ordering.
Keep Running Total of Things You Need to Buy
Once you’ve put a price in for every item, you need to buy (don’t forget sales tax and shipping/handling fees), total up the materials cost.
Estimate Labor Part of Remodel
To estimate the labor portion of your bid, I recommend taking your materials cost from #4, above, and multiplying by 2. For example, say all the materials you need a total of $5,000. You can expect to pay about $10,000 for skilled labor to install all those items for you.
Type of Contractor
Now that you have material and labor estimates for the job, are you planning to hire a general contractor to manage the project professionally? If yes, you should take the materials and labor costs and multiply times 1.25. The result is a close approximation of what your bathroom remodel will cost you.
You should now be able to estimate bathroom remodel costs for your home. Make your space more beautiful and increase the value of your home.
